European Union/Greece/humanitarian crisis/adoption of an Emergency Assistance instrument for European Union member states
Paris, March 15, 2016
I welcome the adoption by the General Affairs Council in Brussels today of an Emergency Assistance instrument for EU countries confronted by an exceptional humanitarian crisis. This decision was essential in order to step up assistance to Greece, given the urgent humanitarian situation it faces.
I am pleased that the Council adopted this financial instrument, which the European Commission had proposed on 2 March following on from the European Council of 18 and 19 February, exceptionally quickly.
Provided with €700 million over three years, it will allow us to support Greece to respond to the humanitarian emergency linked to the massive influx of refugees and the closing of the border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
There is not a moment to lose if Europe is to implement all means in support of member states on the front line and avoid a humanitarian disaster in Greece./.
