1. Uganda - Meeting between M. François Hollande, President of the Republic, and Mr Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda - Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic (Paris - September 19, 2016)
The French President hosted a meeting today with Mr Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda.
The Head of State emphasized Uganda’s positive contribution to peace and security in Africa, particularly the participation of Ugandan forces in the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM). Every year nearly 4,500 Ugandan soldiers benefit from training provided by France before being deployed to Somalia as part of the fight against the terrorist group al-Shabaab.
The two heads of state also discussed the crisis Burundi is experiencing. François Hollande welcomed the commitment by the countries in the region to the opening of genuine political dialogue. He recalled his commitment to the swift implementation of decisions by the African Union and the United Nations, particularly when it comes to the deployment of AU and UN observers.
Regarding the Democratic Republic of Congo, François Hollande signaled his concern about the delay in organizing elections and reiterated his commitment to respect for constitutions.
On the fight against climate change, François Hollande welcomed Uganda’s ratification on 15 September 2016 of the Paris Agreement reached at COP21. He confirmed that France will continue its support for Uganda, to encourage in that country the development of renewable energy, access to water and urban transport.
The French President encouraged his counterpart to continue the institutional reforms begun in Uganda, and reiterated France’s commitment to the principle of non-discrimination against minorities.
