Statement by Foreign and European Affairs Minister, Bernard Kouchner

Paris, January 15, 2008

France condemns in the strongest possible terms today’s attack on a vehicle of the United States Embassy in Beirut which caused several deaths and injured many people.

It expresses its condolences to the victims’ families and its solidarity with the Lebanese people and their government at this extremely difficult time. It also offers its sympathy to the United States and its representatives in Lebanon. France wishes to see a full investigation into this terrorist act and the perpetrators and instigators brought to justice.

In the face of attempts to destabilize the country, France renews its call to all parties inside and outside Lebanon to assume their responsibility and do everything possible to end the dangerous vacuum at the head of the Lebanese state. Everything must be done so that the plan unanimously adopted by the Arab foreign ministers in Cairo is implemented immediately. It reaffirms its unconditional support for this plan and Amr Moussa’s efforts.

France, Lebanon’s friend, stands shoulder to shoulder with this country. It will continue to play its full part in the efforts being made, with the support of the international community, to promote Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, stability and unity./.
