1. Saudi Arabia - Bilateral relations - Fight against terrorism - Meeting between Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic, and HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic (Paris - November 9, 2017)

The President had a meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, at the latter’s invitation, in Riyadh on Thursday, November 9.

The President and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman talked at length about the importance of preserving the region’s stability, fighting terrorism and above all working for peace.

Together they discussed Lebanon’s situation, after Prime Minister Hariri’s resignation. President Macron reiterated the importance France attaches to Lebanon’s stability, security, sovereignty and integrity.

The two leaders looked at other regional issues, particularly Yemen, for which the French President emphasized his concern about the humanitarian situation and his readiness to facilitate a political resolution of the crisis.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to recall the high standard of bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and France at every level – diplomatically, economically, culturally and militarily. France supports the Crown Prince’s development strategy defined in «Vision 2030» and welcomes his speech on the opening-up of his country and support for a moderate Islam. Over the next few months, France and Saudi Arabia have pledged to work together to give their relationship heightened ambition.

Finally, in the Sahel area, France and Saudi Arabia have agreed to lend joint support to the countries participating in the G5 in the fight against terrorism.

2. Saudi Arabia - Reply by Mr. Christophe Castaner, Minister of State for Relations with Parliament, attached to the Prime Minister, Government Spokesperson, to a question in the Senate (Paris - November 9, 2017)

Question on the situation in Saudia Arabia

France always favours dialogue. The President is currently in Abu Dhabi for the inauguration of the Louvre. Tensions are running high, you’re right. The firing of the missile from Yemen, targeting Riyadh, is unacceptable. Saad Hariri’s resignation is a destabilizing factor, which we regret.

We support the initiative for Kuwait to mediate to resolve the tensions within the Gulf Cooperation Council. Along with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Union, we believe that Iran must continue to implement the nuclear agreement strictly. We support the generation which is beginning reforms in Saudi Arabia. We’re very committed in the region, because of our security and our and Europe’s interests.

3. UNESCO - Election of Mrs. Audrey Azoulay - Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic (Paris - November 10, 2017)

The President congratulated Audrey Azoulay, who has been elected Director-General of UNESCO. He renewed his confidence in and support for her and wished her every success in carrying out her mandate.

The President has every confidence in Audrey Azoulay to provide UNESCO with the means to fulfil its essential missions faced with the challenges of our time: access to education, culture and science for everyone, the protection of world heritage and safeguarding of our planet.

In a world experiencing violent conflicts and the rise of obscurantism, the protection of our common goods, emancipation through knowledge, the sharing of universal and humanist principles and the unceasing quest for peace are more necessary than ever.
