1. United Kingdom - Franco-British agreement on scallop fishing in the Baie de Seine - Stéphane Travert pays tribute to efforts made by fishermen - Communiqué issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (Paris,2018-09-18)
Stéphane Travert, Minister of Agriculture and Food, welcomes the agreement between French and British fishermen on the scallop fishing season in the Baie de Seine.
Despite no solution being found following the meetings in London and Paris, discussions were never broken off and industry representatives continued to negotiate to reach an agreement at least on boats over 15 metres long.
This was reached yesterday and endorsed today by the French and British fisheries ministries.
British boats over 15 metres long therefore pledge not to fish for scallops at the East Channel site until the end of October and will benefit, in return, from more fishing effort from France, under the same conditions as last year.
The Minister is very pleased that French and British government officials worked continuously to facilitate the conclusion of an agreement.
Stéphane Travert says, “I pay tribute to the efforts made by French fishermen to propose reasonable compensation for the smallest British vessels in return for the commitment these were asked to make to delay the date they begin fishing in the Baie de Seine. The objective pursued by French fishermen to protect stocks by limiting fishing periods will therefore be adhered to."
Stéphane Travert also thanks his counterpart, George Eustice, the British fisheries minister, with whom he remained in close contact to facilitate the search for an agreement between industry professionals./.
