As part of the “Filming Spain’s Exile in Our Hearts” film series, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy is proud to present a screening of the film "The War is Over" (La Guerre est finie).
From an Academy-Award nominated screenplay by Jorge Semprun, French director Alain Resnais created a classically beautiful cinematic account of a revolutionary’s voyage from Spain to report to party headquarters in Paris and to visit his Scandinavian mistress (Ingrid Thulin). Played by Yves Montand, Diego is a “professional revolutionary” who fights against the fascist regime in Spain, despite knowing the cause is hopeless.
Moving across time, incorporating “flash-forwards,” and space, travelling between France and Spain, the story unfolds from the perspective of Diego, whose own ideological crisis pushes the film into a psychological realm reflective of Resnais’ previous films (Hiroshima Mon Amour and Last Year at Marienbad). Thanks to Resnais’ realistic confrontation of a generation’s political plight 30 years after the Spanish Civil War, La Guerre est finie is "a landmark film" in cinematic history (Dave Kehr). "With La Guerre est finie, [Resnais] unexpectedly gives us not only psychology but an exciting thriller, done with great artistry" (Roger Ebert).
The War is Over will be presented by Professor Pierre Verdaguer and Professor José Maria Naharro-Calderón (University of Maryland).
