Meeting between M. Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the Republic, and M. Zhao Jinjun, Special representative of the President of the People’s Republic of China - Communique issued by the Presidency of the Republic

Paris, April 18, 2008

This morning President Sarkozy had a meeting with Mr Zhao Jinjun, Special Representative of Mr Hu Jintao, President of the People’s Republic of China, and former Chinese ambassador to France.

The Head of State and Mr Zhao Jinjun discussed the recent events which have, in particular, occurred in the Tibet Autonomous Region. They each gave their analysis and vision of the future. President Sarkozy renewed France’s appeal for the resumption of the dialogue between the Dalai Lama’s representatives and the Chinese authorities.

It was agreed that the discussions between France and China would continue over the next few days in the framework of the Franco-Chinese strategic partnership, which both parties intend to continue broadening./.
