Manet and Modern Beauty - Los Angeles

Published on December 16, 2019
The Getty Center presents the first exhibition ever to explore the last years of the short life of Édouard Manet (1832-1883), one of the leading avant-garde painters of modern Paris.

This exhibition focuses on the painter’s fascination with fashion, flowers, and the Parisienne through his stylish portraits, luscious still lifes, delicate pastels and watercolors, and vivid café and garden scenes. As the leading avant-garde painter of modern Paris who earned this distinction through a series of provocative paintings that shocked contemporary audiences, Manet was known as a “painter of modern life.” His works sought to incorporate a feminine embodiment in all of its particular, fleeting beauty.

In Manet and Modern Beauty, the exhibition highlights a less familiar and more intimate side of this celebrated artist.
