The Inserm-USA office has been established in 1998 at the Embassy of France to the United States of America. It represents Inserm both in the USA and in Canada. The Inserm-USA office serves as a support and a relay to the bilateral cooperation of the institute with north-American partners. The Inserm-USA office is part of the Office for Science and Technology of the French Embassy.

The main missions of the Inserm-USA office

  1. ) Prospect to build new highly-valuable partnerships with leading partners on a wide range of domains of mutual interest;
  2. ) Increase the awareness bout Inserm, and to encourage the mobility and exchange of students, faculties and researchers;
  3. ) Monitor the main changes within the north-American research landscape in life sciences and health, and to inform about the major initiatives of potential interest for the Inserm community;
  4. ) Support and accompany the cooperation of Inserm’s researchers, and to act as a referent to any French post-doctorates and researchers staying in the USA and Canada to keep a link with Inserm and the French research.

Inserm in the US

The United-States of America are the 1st international partner of Inserm in terms of co-publications, amounting to nearly of 20% of the total of International co-publications of the institute.
As of now, the Inserm’s partnerships with in the US counts:

  • 4 cooperation agreements, including two with the institutes of the NIH (key partner of the cooperation of Inserm in the US),
  • International Associated Laboratories (laboratory without walls based on a common scientific project carries out by two research teams),
  • 1 Mixed Unit Abroad (UMI), based at the University of California in Irvine (UCI), and
  • almost 15 researchers appointed as a secondment in diverse US higher education and research institutions.

About Inserm

Founded in 1964, the French National Institute of Health and Medical research (Inserm) is a public science and technology institute, jointly supervised by the French Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and women’s Rights. Inserm is the only French public research institute to focus entirely on human health. It develops research activities through all the pathway from the research laboratory to the bed of the patient.
