Culture and Education
The French Embassy’s culture and education programs are perhaps the most visible of all the diplomatic activities undertaken by France’s official representations in the United States.
While associated with France’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., the Office of Higher Education, Arts, and French Language leads cultural operations from its location in New York City. Its programming spans books, the visual and performing arts, as well as the film, television and online sectors. The same office maintains partnerships with non-governmental organizations, provides grants and other programs, and organizes a busy calendar of events for New York and the surrounding region. In education, French-American cooperation includes a broad range of partnerships for professionals and students at every level and age. The Embassy of France conducts programs with American stakeholders in numerous forms, from support of French classes and stipends for study trips to France for American teachers of French, to theme-based conferences (science, gastronomy) designed to enhance the presence of French language and cultures studies in American educational bodies.
France’s embassy and regional consulates in the U.S. currently operate a number of university- level structures, such as the Partner University Fund and the Chateaubriand Fellowship. At the secondary level, France works to support the prominence of the French language in American classrooms by promoting programs such as the French-American Baccalaureate, and organizations like CODOFIL (Conseil pour le développement du français en Louisiane), or the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana.
