Interview given by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, to the weekly magazine L’Obs

Q. – Are you less uncompromising towards the Iranians since they became our allies-of-the-moment against Daesh [ISIL]?

THE MINISTER – Let’s be clear: France is in favour of an agreement with Iran as soon as it fully recognizes civilian nuclear power but rules out access to military nuclear power. Nuclear proliferation in such an eruptive region would be a risk we mustn’t run. If Tehran got hold of the bomb, other countries of the region would immediately be clamouring for it, quite apart from the risk of nuclear weapons falling into the hands of a terrorist group. So, for Iran, civilian nuclear power, yes; the nuclear bomb, no. (…)./.
